The Yew Trees

The creaking gate that bids me pass
Hinged by crusted,buckled brass
Bears witness,stories told within
The graveyard's pounding silent din

A noble vigil, ancient yew trees keep
As sentries guard eternal sleep
Stand their ground with patient care
Nature's own compassion rare

Upon a headstone carved with pride
Words of love now side by side
With ivy, a mournful grieving shroud
Adorns the granite standing proud

To listen now for secrets hushed
Of dreams that lived but lie here crushed
And whispered echoes of lives now spent
Borrowed,shared but transient lent

But look again to mother earth
And rejoice with hope at our re-birth
Of spirits found and rendered new
In the noble, vigilant, ancient yew

Love's Cascade (for my wife)

Sit with me and think awhile
Of days now past and softly smile
How love came calling, setting free
The silent unassuming me

So laboured was this weary life
Before you smiled and shared my strife
A tender touch and mood of rapture
Did balm my soul and heart now capture

Was I so lonely before you came?
Where love's sweet bliss I could not claim
Left it's warm caress a distant charm
And I a martyr to loveless harm

Where now to ramble paths unknown
This dread to lose a precious stone
Sets my fearful pulse to race
And yearning for your splendoured grace

So sit with me and think anew
Of love's cascade I give to you
Thoughts of he now gladly smitten
The gentle words of romance written

Winter Scene

To gaze upon a winter scene
And ponder nature's sleep serene
But crowding,jostling thoughts unbidden
Call upon a memory hidden

Of darkened moods and darker days
Walk hand in hand a somber phase
Through endless unforgiving night
A thankless task and bitter plight

To dream of futures,wasted,lost
And lay amidst the cruel frost
Emotions frozen,gripped of cold
A numbing timeless fear untold

But childhoods past untouched by woe
When gleeful heart played in the snow
And innocent joyful spirits sing
No warning of pain that years would bring

So what now of the winter scene
Where concealed mourning lays unseen
The child within that dwells there still
Is he that feels no brooding chill

Addiction

Darkness my friend embrace me now
My dreams run deep from mind and how
On waking memory finds no release
As fear's icy touch creeps upon my peace

What angst is this that eats me now?
And limbs that tense with furrowed brow
With pounding heart and thoughts now screaming
Am I never to learn it's twisted meaning?

But now a saviour though bitter-sweet
Stalls my racing heart to meet
With soothing calm and subdued will
A white and shining valium pill

Such falsehood is the price I pay
To free myself for one more day
But freedom bought at what high cost
If a slave to pills my heart is lost

But ever are my thoughts contrasting
Of a demonised drug that keeps me lasting
This burning beacon I welcome lit
A compromise or a bottomless pit

The Psychiatrist's Chair

In trepidation's fearful shade
I suffer tortures fate has made
Wreckage stricken, thrown by chance
To stagger weighed with tearful glance

Onwards to my reckoned day
Reprieve and solace or dismay
The addict judged by smug disdain
The doctor's slashing prose of pain

Impatience spat,he barks my name
And summoned now I curse my shame
To slump resigned within the chair
It's yawning gape the gallows despair

And accusations, the blade plunged deep
Scornful uttered, my guilt to reap
He smiles the stabbing serrated sneer
Twists the words and exploits the fear

Bitter now the silence reigns
The scratching pen betrays my pains
His work is done my faith lies broken
Compassion's death at his bile spoken

Hurried,shunned, dismissed I fled
From ruthless cutting verse I bled
And wandered paths of darker shade
The doctor's pitiless prose had laid

Booze

In years gone by you befriended me
As though through mist I could not see
My hopes alive I turned to you
Pursuit of confidence I dreamed my due

But vain indeed my misplaced trust
With each and every callous thrust
You gouged from me the very core
That was the future,expectation bore

With you I wandered roads of confusion
A shattered heart and sad illusion
I lunged to grasp your elusive high
But breathed the soul's tormented sigh

How twist of fortune and purest love
One day descended as a dove
To slay my parasitic foe
My life to her it is I owe

Now over time I have found true
Hatred burns in me for you
But all my love is kept for she
The one who believed when hope left me
